Assignment 12: Anaglyphs Making a 2D image look 3D.
To make these work correctly you must photograph the same image twice.
Focus on one point and set your camera to a medium aperture. The best subjects have a foreground middle ground and a background.
Take one shot of your subject then shift the camera to the left slightly (keep the same point of focus and do not shift up or down) take the second shot.
Do not shift too much or the images will not synch when they are put together in Photoshop.
Try several pairs images with different subjects before you move onto the photoshop section of the assignment.
Tips:
Try different kinds of shots. Things that are close up and things that are not. Try shallow depth of field or long depth of field.
The 3D effect does not always work for every shot so try different ones for the best result.
In Photoshop:
1.Open both images as separate files.
2. Determine the right image from the left, this will be your base image.
3. Copy the left image and paste it on top of the right ( a new layer will appear with the left image in your layers window).
4. Select the base (right) image layer double click on the little lock so it will un-lock the layer.
5. Go to Image- adjust- black and white, choose OK.
6. Go back to the bottom (right) layer and double click on the layer to open up the Layer Style adjustment window, un-select the red channel.
7. Repeat steps 4-6 with the top (left) layer but un-check the green and blue channels.
8. With your selection tool use your keyboard arrows to move the top layer into the proper position (match up the main focus point in the 2 images).
9. Use the glasses to help find the best position.
10. Save image / print image / post image on ePortfolio.
In your e-portfolio write down anything you learned and a reflection about the assignment. Give a brief description on the process. Does your image clearly produce the 3D effect when you use the glasses? How many images did you have to do to get the correct effect?
Assignment 13: Multi Image Blend: Make a person float or multiple self portrait This assignment is based around using Photoshops layers, masks and blending modes. Use the tutorials below to help you accomplish the proper look.
Once you have completed the work save as a Jpeg and post to your portfolio.
How did you create your image?
What Photoshop tools did you use?
Is the image successful in creating the illusion of floating?
Is there a shado to help create the illusion?
How Might you have approached the assignment differently if you were to do it again?
IMAGE MIDTERM Choose the best image from the first half of the semester. This image should be a well-rounded photograph. Good composition, exposure, subject matter, a center of interest, use of shutter or aperture to accentuate the subject, etc. I want you to write about why this is your favorite and why (using photographic terms) is it a good photograph. I am NOT looking for "I like it because it is a nice picture"! Be descriptive and explain the image. Also, you need to title the photograph. Check out this link about titling images. LINK
Post this image and write up in Unit 3 of your portfolio.
Assignment 14: Introduction to studio lighting (The Portrait) You have spent several days outside and learning your camera and how the light around you effects your images and how to set your camera to work the best for the lighting situation.
This project is best done with 2 to 3 people in a group. One as the photographer - One as the subject and possible one as a light person to help move the lights for the photographer.
For the best result you will need to set your cameras resolution setting to RAW instead of Large JPEG. This will change your editing style and how your images are uploaded to Photoshop but your images will be more precisely editable. We will discuss this in more detail in class.
Take time to google "Portrait Photography", look at the images for some inspiration. Look at the Links below.
We are now going to play around with "studio lighting". There are several kinds of lights that can be used for this.
Look these up and write the definition in your portfolio**
Strobes
Hot lights or continuous lighting
Natural light
Using controlled lighting, photograph a person / portrait. We are looking to flatter our subject unless purposely using lighting to distort the subject.
There are three main traditional or Classical Portraits styles, "head shot, Three quarters or Full Body; Try taking photographs of your subject in each of these.
Produce 4 finished images demonstrating 4 different lighting combinations with at least one example of each of the three classic styles.
Try lighting with: One single light, by itself or use a reflector to brighten up shadows. Two lights, one main light and one fill light. Three lights, one main, one fill and a highlight or background light.
Look up and define the following about studio lighting:
Key Light
Back Light
Fill Light
There are several accessories that can be use to help you when taking photos in a studio setting. Research these and write a definition in your portfolio for all.
Tripod
Soft box
Snoot
Backdrop
Barn door
Beauty Dish
Gel
Umbrella
Reflector
This will also require editing in Photoshop. Clean up your images (use spot healing brush, clone stamp and color correcting) Crop to correct the composition.
In your e-portfolio write down anything you learned including the definitions from above and a reflection about the assignment.
Was it difficult to control the lights?
How did you change the lighting set up?
How did you edit your images, what tools did you used?
If you were to do the assignment again how would you approach it differently?
